Hodges era nato nel 1946 a Germantown, Tennessee. Nel corso di una carriera lunga 40 anni, aveva collaborato con alcuni dei più grandi musicisti soul. Tra questi, Al Jarreau, Syl Johnson, Ann Peebles e Al Green, con cui firmò alcuni indimenticabili successi: Take me to the river, Love and happiness, Here I am (come and take me) e Full of fire.
Nel 2005, Teenie (che è anche lo zio del rapper Drake) aveva collaborato con Cat Power sul suo album, The greatest.
