Babel dei Mumford & Sons si è aggiudicato il Grammy come «Album dell’anno» alla cerimonia di consegna dei premi (gli “Oscar della musica”, giunti alla 55a edizione), da poco conclusasi allo Staples Center di Los Angeles. Buona affermazione anche per Gotye e i favoritissimi Black Keys: per il primo, la vittoria nelle categorie «Record of the year» e «Best pop duo/group performance» (con Somebody that I used to know, assieme a Kimbra) e «Best alternative album» (Making mirrors); per i secondi, il riconoscimento per il miglior album rock (El camino), la migliore performance e canzone rock (Lonely boy) e la vittoria personale di Dan Auerbach come miglior produttore. La «Canzone dell’anno», invece, è We are young dei newyorkesi fun. (anche band dell’anno). Tra i veterani, all’asciutto Bruce Springsteen (comunque «MusicCares Person of the Year»), Coldplay, Muse e Jack White, sconfitti nella categoria «Best rock album» proprio dai Black Keys, mentre con Kisses on the bottom, Paul McCartney porta a casa la statuetta (la quarta da solista) nella sezione «Best traditional pop vocal album».

La serata è stata animata da svariate performance live, con, tra gli altri, i tributi a Bob Marley (ad opera di Sting, Rihanna, Bruno Mars e Ziggy Marley) e soprattutto a Levon Helm, storico batterista della Band, scomparso l’anno scorso: sul palco, assieme ad Elton John, Mumford & Sons, Zac Brown, Brittany Howard (Alabama Shakes), Mavis Staples e T Bone Burnett.
